The executive coaching phenomenon
Little
data is available on the size of the executive coaching industry
globally, however, in Australia, the 2001 Leadership, Employment
and Direction Survey found almost 20 % of business
leaders and 10% of senior managers have an executive coach.
When interviewing 80% of the leaders of the most successful fastest
growing businesses in Victoria, Australia, Pamela Wakefield-Semmens,
CEO of Pentangle Pty Ltd, found that they all relied on a coach
or mentor for support.
Executive coaching is a
combination of:
| Personal or
Career Counselling |
| Business problem
solving and decision support |
| Leadership
development support |
| Guidance in
managing people and resources |
For people who are in executive management roles.
Executive
coaching is also relevant for people in professional roles who often
need to operate autonomously, providing leadership in areas in which
they have extensive knowledge and experience.

Executive
coaching involves a one-to-one helping relationship between the
coach and their client. Sometimes coaches offer a combination of
individual and small exclusive group sessions. Coaching is usually
face-to-face but is supplemented by telephone, email and fax communications.
Usually
the client has encountered some problems in a specific area which
requires a different approach or the adoption of new behaviors and
the cessation of unhelpful or negative behaviors. Sometimes there
is a need for a new perspective or support in finding new ways of
thinking, problem solving and decision making.
